I am choosing short films to show in the 2nd annual George Town Literary Festival which will take place 29 November - 1 December in a few venues in the beautiful capital city of Penang.

If you have a short film made in 2013 — fiction, documentary, experimental, animation — set in Penang and/or with a Penang theme, do send me an email at matahari.books@gmail.com . Of course, you are welcome to start making a new short right now!

The American writer who died recently left an indelible impact and is being mourned worldwide now. Nothing for me to add, except maybe this: The first scene in Freaky Deaky, the one that ends with 'ceiling' — that IS how it's done.

He observes well, his empathy shines through and I am so glad he made them.

He is planning his first feature film (the final short here is a documentary sketch he made while researching it) and this is cause for even more optimism.
Almost 15 years later (who wouldda thunk it!) I now publish a collection of his short fiction and poetry:

I wanted the title to have 'nakal' because the word 'kenakalan' is the one I remember most from the introduction to a compilation of his which was published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, and which I read as a teenager. I thought it was an odd word to use for someone with the venerable title of Sasterawan Negara. But when I read the contents of that book (especially that poem with the pun on 'punai') I appreciated how apt it could be. (But it was much later that I came across his short story "Betisnya Bunting Padi" and was pleasantly startled by its – but I suppose this is a spoiler – homoeroticism). I initially thought of Kerja-Kerja Nakal as a title but the editor of this selection Hafiz Hamzah wisely changed it to Yang Nakal-Nakal.

Thanks so much to Haslina Usman for consenting to this project!

More details on Yang Nakal-Nakal here. It launches this Sunday.

Shot mainly on Jonker Street, Melaka, with the poignant last line: “Where do we go from here?”

3057: MY EARTH (4 min)
Directed by Gary Chong
Set in the future of 3075, a mother presents her daughter on her 18th birthday, the gift of a virtual reality trip to revisit the past earth from generations ago....where the earth was still abundant with "green". Like AVATAR, starring Mislina Mustaffa instead of Sigourney Weaver.

LAST FRAGMENTS OF WINTER (23 min)
Directed by Edmund Yeo
A Malaysian film student travels to Japan to study and is amazed by many things. About a girl in the snow, for instance. Shown at various international film festivals including Dubai and Rotterdam.

TOTAL RUNNING TIME: 110 min

The French scribes who coined the term ‘film noir’ saw a
common streak of romantic pessimism brought about by economic depression as

urbanization with its spiraling crime rate, as well as the deadlier scourge of
the two World Wars). There was also the Criss-Cross
(another title) of gender roles as women were suddenly more prominent in the
workforce; the men were away fighting. The latter phenomenon mutated through a
sensationalist fever-dream into the femme fatale – women who resorted to the
most sinister and carnal means to stay ahead of the game, but never at the
expense of their hairstyles or nails.

The height of noir expression in black-and-white KL
cinema is P. Ramlee’s Dr. Rushdi
(1970). One of his last films, it’s a gorgeously cynical thing of shadows,
guilt and entrapment. There’s adultery, murder, suicide, crashing waves,
lightning bolts and – as if all of this weren’t striking enough – the first
movie appearance of the Pekeliling Flats (which has since been abandoned; how
quickly things disappear here!) In the color era, the most sustained noir effort
would be Adman Salleh’s vice-drenched Bintang
Malam (1991).

‘KL noir’ elements abounded in the Malay pulp novels
of the late 1960s, most of which are now out of print. They included Dahaga (1966) by Yahya Samah and Kuala Lumpur Kita Punya (1967) by
Abdullah Hussain; you should SEE the anxiety of Malay literary critics decades
later in explaining how the latter ‘immoral’
book could have been written by a man who then became a National
Laureate.

Although brothels, opium and gangsters were as much features
of early KL as tin, it seems that its architecture started to accommodate noir
stories (which require a certain weariness) only in the late 1960s. This is because in the preceding decades,
Singapore was a more prominent story source.

I will not give away much about the 15 items you are
about to read. Just to say that, unlike in the ang moh noir tradition, we in
the exotic Orient have ghosts, since supernatural beings are not immune from
the grudges and mayhem that noir can thrive on. Lovers of local showbiz gossip
will chortle knowingly at one tale; habitués of shopping malls (which is
another way of saying KLites) will recognize the loneliness of being in our
crowds; the immigrant labor that the middle-class, in our wannabe First World entitlement,
willfully ignore gets a rightful narrative voice; hijabsters may have reason to
pause; the loan-shark business will never seem so dangerous; we even have a cop
narrator although he is closer to the creepy protagonist of The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson (my
favorite pulp writer) than the relatively ethical beacons of hardboiled crime
yarns.

You will recognize places – KLCC, KL Sentral, Asian
Heritage Row, Mid Valley Megamall – though who knows how many of them, in a
couple of decades, will be gone with the winds of change like the Pekeliling
Flats? As a town (and later city) hacked out of a malarial jungle, KL rewards
survival. We are not (or not yet!) an overcrowded megapolis like Bangok, Manila
or Jakarta. Our class disparities aren’t as stark; perhaps the desperation that
noir needs isn’t as harsh. But we have our unique ambiguities; a particularly
telling one is the recent controversy over whether KL was ‘founded’ by a
Chinese headman or a Malay aristocrat.

All noir stories are, at heart, barbed valentines to
our cages. I shall leave you with a quote from a favorite film noir, Detour (1945). The doomed couple is
trapped, just like P. Ramlee and Sarimah would later be in Dr. Rushdi. There seems to be no way out. She hisses: “You don’t
like me very much, do you?” And he snaps back: “Like you? I love you!” And you have never heard that
four-letter word spat with such disgust.

This seems tough. I think Seefood has the best shot at winning because it looks of 'international standard' (and the match between the title and image actually does tell a story) but...why does it have to resemble Finding Nemo a wee bit too much?

My favourite would have to be the kinetic and vivid (although, yes, a bit 'Thai action movie') 8 Jam. Simply because it's the poster that makes me most want to watch the film. So there!

Having said that, I would have chosen Bunohan hands down ... if only the film had used its thrillingly portentous teaser poster:

It captures the oneiric spirit of the actual film much better (not that I have anything against Zahiril Adzim's left nipple in the final poster, of course). I even prefer the one they did for its Oscar campaign:

UPDATE: (Feb 25)

The big cheese of FilemKita has brought to my attention that this is Seefood's real poster (I had posted a teaser – damn you, Google Image Search!); which makes me all the more certain Seefood will win:
Some notes:

1. This is the first time that the highest-grossing Malaysian movie of the year is not in the Malay language or any of its 3 most common derivatives: Bahasa Melayu Hantu, Bahasa Melayu Rempit & Bahasa Melayu Jiwang.

2. When Bunohan (the most interesting local movie I saw last year) was released, even some of its admirers found it tough to understand. A University Malaya professor even complained that it was "more difficult than Titanic." And yet it did better than half of the movies last year, most of which were presumably easier than Titanic.

3. Movie producers are now complaining there are too many movies and not enough movie-goers. I say: there are too many movie-goers that producers had ignored for too long, and – guess what? – most of those potential customers ain't coming back.

4. About half the movies in this list (including some worthwhile ones like The Collector and Chow Kit) lost money or barely broke even. This is a case-study in Social Darwinism.

5. The three movies that banked on 1980s nostalgia - Leftwings, Zaiton Ceritaku and Adik Manja Returns – tanked. Contrast this with the American movie Ted. Does this mean Malaysians are more forgetful?

6. The movies that banked on us recognizing 'real-life people' like 29 Februari and Zaiton Ceritaku didn't do great. Perhaps Malaysians don't like reality? (Which explains why there has yet to be a Malaysian documentary to be released theatrically. Two of mine got banned. Ahem.)

7. Two expensive animation projects – Seefood and War of the Worlds: Goliath – were lucky to get generous grants from ... those government agencies that get excited when people mention 'multimedia'. Though their professed targets of "breaking into the international market" has yet to be truly achieved, ambition is always a good thing. Love and strawberries are good also, although I didn't watch Strawberi Cinta.

Let me tell you how the next two Fixi novels, Dosa and Licik, came about.

In June last year I attended the Jakarta Book Fair (and was a little surprised to find it much smaller than the KL one in PWTC every year.) I also visited the offices of two publishers, Gramedia and Gagas Media, and blabbed to them about my company Buku Fixi, which at that time was a mere 2 months old! I had a vague idea that I wanted to buy rights to urban contemporary Indonesian novels, if I found any that tickled my fancy.

This is the stack I came back with:

When I got back to KL I passed the whole stack to one of the fastest readers I know: Pecah author Khairulnizam Bakeri. He gobbled all of them up and then mentioned his two favourites. So I read those two first, and was immediately charmed by:

It's a bildungsroman; or coming-of-age tale (for the non-Germans out there). About the burgeoning creativity and also sexuality of an Indonesian teenager who is studying in (of all places) Oregon. It was vulnerable and precocious; I loved the fact that so much of it took place in the laundry room, which brought back fond memories of my own coming-of-age saga when I was studying in (of all places) Norwich. But enough about me.

I considered Halo, Aku Dalam Novel for Buku Fixi but the main drawback is that it's a wee bit short; maybe less than 50,000 words. And we wanted something around 60,000 words.

So I looked up Nuril Basri on Facebook and congratulated him. He replied, and it took him a few messages to figure out I am not Indonesian. So I introduced himself properly, as being Malaysia's most beloved writer-publisher, bla bla bla. That was when he said he had a new manuscript; it was called Bukan Perjaka (which in Malay would be Bukan Teruna) and he asked if I wanted to look at it. I said "Ya, dong!" or words to that effect.

The Word document was sent and it was just slightly over 60,000 words, which of course I took as a sign from the Almighty. I read it and thought it was even better than his previous novel. Also a coming-of-age story about teenagers and sexuality, but everything takes place smack in Indonesia. Despite a potentially explosive mix of conservative religion (the narrator Ricky is a santri, who stays and studies in an Islamic school) and non-conservative sex (the drag queens, the pimps, the gay clubs, and oh yes that photography session conducted by an Indonesian equivalent of a Datin Ghairah), it is at heart a strong tale of seemingly unlikely friendships. It's about how our real families are the ones we pick for ourselves.

I said I wanted it. Surprisingly, there is no confirmed publisher for the original version yet, so the Malaysian translation comes out first. Dosa will be out in Pesta Buku KL and the 27 year-old author will make his first trip to KL to promote it:

The other book, Licik, came about when the scriptwriter Sham Hashim sent me an email on 10 April 2011. He said: "dgn emel ni sy attach sinopsis novel sy..plan awal nak buat filem la kononnya..tapi setelah direjek berulang kali..sy hilang pertimbangan & amuk!"

I read the treatment for the film-that-was-not-to-be and was immediately gripped because I love con stories. This particular one brought back fond memories of Sidney Sheldon's If Tomorrow Comes, one of my favourites from that pulpmeister. The twist (or rather, one of the twists) is that the protagonist Fira is trained in the art of the con by her father.

I encouraged him to flesh out this film treatment but months went by with nothing from him! He was simply too busy with TV scripts (syukur, ada rezeki...). New Year's Day came and there was still no draft of a novel. So I suggested to him: Why don't we get a co-writer? Since the entire synopsis is done anyway, and the Fasha Sandha movie was not going to happen, it would be such a waste!

He agreed, so we sent out a call on the Fixi Facebook page, asking if anyone would want to write a con novel based on a comprehensive synopsis and completed first 2 chapters. A few applied; one was particularly impressive because she took it upon herself to write chapter 3 all by herself, in the space of 24 hours! She is Julie Anne, so the job was given to her.

Two months later, it was done! She didn't stick entirely to the extended synopsis -- among other things, she changed a location from Kelantan to Sarawak (where she lives). So that's how the first co-authored Fixi book came about:

I would like to thank Mark Zuckerberg, because as you can see, Facebook was instrumental in getting both books published.

Have a good Friday the 13th. See you in two weeks at PWTC.
Amir Muhammadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08144421497045270238noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403017110948354453.post-78730586111953119762012-03-30T09:27:00.000+08:002012-05-08T01:15:56.211+08:00How I became P. Ramlee's publisher

When I wrote 120 Malay Movies I tried to watch all of the 34 movies that P. Ramlee directed. I almost succeeded.

I even made sure to watch a rare screening of Gelora as part of a retrospective in Paris (the sexy noir is not available on VCD and is not shown on TV). So that's how I managed to watch 33 of the films.

Almost there. But my quest would never be complete. Because there is one film that is believed to be lost, forever. No one has seen it in decades. Even all the money of Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud (who is a huge P. Ramlee fan) cannot locate a single copy of the film.

And the film is Sitora Harimau Jadian (1964). It has simply been lost due to neglect.

It's sadly apt that this was the first film he directed in Kuala Lumpur; and its 'lost' status can be seen as an unfortunate foreshadow of how deleterious his KL years would prove to be for him. (When Malaysians wax nostalgic for the films of P. Ramlee, they inevitably wax nostalgic for Singapore, which is where the first 16 films he directed, from Penarik Beca (1955) to Tiga Abdul (1964), were made.)

Technically, Sitora Harimau Jadian wasn't supposed to have been well-made. Merdeka Studios in KL was simply not sufficiently equipped or financed to handle it. When a print was screened for Shaw Brothers in Singapore, the bosses walked out after a few minutes. But I spoke to Othman Hafsham who had seen it as a boy in 1964, and he remembered it as "scary" (in a good way, I presume).

Sitora Harimau Jadian would have been P. Ramlee's sole horror movie. (By contrast, Sumpah Orang Minyak was a horror movie only in its last quarter).

So 120 Malay Movies, the book, was released in late 2010, with no chapter on Sitora Harimau Jadian.

Fast forward a year.

An extremely helpful and enthusiastic ang moh, William Knox, runs The Penang Bookshelf. He wrote in his 1 October 2011 mailing-list (which I subscribe to, and which I recommend) that he would be getting almost 300 Malay books, some in Jawi, from the 1940s and 1960s. They were from "the collection of a Professor Rufus Hendon, a US linguist, who knocked about these parts between the 1940s and 1960s." This professor had bought not only text-books and several editions of Hikayat Abdullah, but he also collected pulp fiction.

Here's how the covers look like. So I looked at that link and one title leapt out. See if you can guess which cover I mean:

Hang on. A book BY P. Ramlee that was CALLED Sitora Harimau Jadian? I knew I had to have it. I sent an eager email to Mr. Knox and "reserved" a few of the books. I had no idea what would be IN the book, but I wanted it.

There were delays in getting the books shipped (from the US) and then catalogued here. It was nail-biting! So it was only on 5 March that I got hold of the four books I ordered. (This is not the space to talk about the other three.)

When I collected the Poslaju package, the first one I read was Sitora Harimau Jadian. As I had hoped, it was a novel based on the movie. Here's a sample:

The novel was published by Penerbitan Angkatan Baru in 1965. Copyright was assigned to P. Ramlee and only his name appears on the front or back cover. But the copyright page states that it is "di-cheritakan sa-mula oleh Zakaria Mohd Yassin". (Does anyone know how to get in touch with him, if he's still around?)

The novel definitely has a 'penceritaan semula' feel; reading it makes you feel like P. Ramlee is describing what happens in his movie, scene by scene. The book is slim, only 124 pages, and I'm glad it was also fleshed out with pictures from the movie (which might be the only chance we will ever get to 'see' it):

I read it in a few hours. And then had a crazy thought: What if I republished it?

The original publisher no longer exists. So I approached P. Ramlee's grandsons (who'd never seen or heard of the book). Luckily, they thought a reprint would be cool; and so the royalty payments would be going to Zakaria Nasir.

I got the novel scanned, retyped and had the spelling modernised. (Thanks to 22-year old Firliyani Jaar, who by sheer coincidence is the grandniece of one of P. Ramlee's contemporaries. S. Kadarisman.)

The story of the novel is diverting enough; it's about the apparently irreconcilable difference between superstition (tahyul) and medical science (as represented by the protagonist Dr. Effendi, played by P. Ramlee himself). It certainly helped to fill a crucial gap in my knowledge of P. Ramlee's filmography.

Then again, if the film was as badly-made as had been reported (even the Publisher's note for the 1965 novel states that "P. Ramlee 'agak' kalah dalam perjuangan-nya") perhaps reading it would be a more satisfying experience. We don't have to be distracted by dodgy make-up effects (especially when the transformation to become a weretiger [harimau jadian] takes place) or fight scenes without the benefit of convincing supporting actors.

It will be published under an imprint of Buku Fixi,
called Fixi Retro. The size will be smaller but the cover thicker, with a
flap (like the original 1965 book). This is the 2012 cover by Teck Hee:
I hereby announce, ladies and gents, that the most famous Buku Fixi novelist is now P. Ramlee. The book will be available at next month's Pesta Buku Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur. You may join the fan-page here.
I thank William Knox, Melissa Saila, Suria Bakar, Zakaria Nasir, Zaidee Nasir, Firliyani Jaar, Julie Anne and Teck Hee for making this possible.
Alhamdulillah!
