2. True to form, it has also been pirated, including online.
3. I don't get any royalties from the pirated editions.
4. But wait a minute! I don't get any royalties from the legitimate edition either.

I knew what I was going into when I signed the contract so I am not actually complaining lah :-)
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to puncture two myths:
1. That filmmaking is somehow a glamorous and lucrative activity. If we were in a different country, the makers of hit sitcoms like 'Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu' would be living on royalties decades after the first air-date, but that is certainly not the case – even though those sitcoms have been repeated many times and even sold to other stations. We all know P. Ramlee died poor, and I am certainly not in the league of P. Ramlee or Hafsyam.
2. That piracy harms artist(e)s. Most of the time, piracy does no such thing. It just deprives the producers of some extra income, that is all.
Strange as it may seem, book-publishing is more lucrative than film directing (when you take into account the amount of time devoted to each project lah).
So, let me repeat, I am not complaining. I had a lot of fun on SUSUK and don't regret it in the least :-)
My mother just bought a pirated DVD. Can you sign it for her? Hahahahahaha.

That goes to show you that pirates only sell fakes when there is a demand. When there isn't any demand for 'pirated books', why bother?
From that simple observation, one can safely assume that Malaysians, sadly, do not like to read.
True! I saw pirated books in Jakarta, Delhi and Dhaka, though.
